Carry the bottle from the base
A filled 750 ml bottle weighs about three pounds. If the lid or a tuck flap carries it, the box fails. Gift box and shipper are different jobs
A presentation box is not a shipping box. For direct-to-consumer or trade shipping, put the gift box inside a bottle shipper with a divider, sized to the gift box rather than the bare bottle.
Finishes that hold their own next to the bottle
Matte or linen wrap with gold or champagne foil suits most labels. Keep the box quieter than the bottle; it should frame the label, not compete with it.
Labeling notes
Federal labeling rules for distilled spirits are in 27 CFR part 5. Under 27 CFR 5.62, a sealed opaque carton used for retail sale must carry all mandatory label information, while a carton the bottle lifts out of may show other information that does not conflict with the bottle label. Neither may carry statements prohibited on the label itself.
