Ribbon and closure hardware
Satin, grosgrain, magnets200 minimum · 12 to 14 business daysRibbon and closure hardware is the set of parts that close or finish a box beyond the board itself: satin or grosgrain ribbon, neodymium magnets, elastic loops, metal hooks and eyelets. We fit them to any of our rigid boxes or supply them for yours, from 200 units in 12 to 14 business days after proof. The common ribbon widths are 3/8, 5/8 and 1 in.
When to choose it, and when not to
Choose ribbon and closure hardware when the box needs to close in a way the board alone cannot, or when the close is part of the moment. A satin bow on a wedding box, a grosgrain lift tab so a lid comes off a tight tray, an elastic and button on a notebook style box, a magnet in a lid that will be opened a hundred times. Ribbon dyed to a brand color, or foil printed with a logo, does a lot for a small part.
Choose a magnetic closure box when all you want is a lid that clicks shut, since the magnet is already part of that build and this page is for adding hardware to another box. Choose a belly band when the box only needs holding shut in transit and the ribbon would be cut off and dropped anyway.

Questions people ask
Can the ribbon be printed?
Yes. Foil stamping on satin or grosgrain gives a metallic logo repeated every 6 to 8 inches along the ribbon, which is what you see on fragrance and chocolate boxes. One color screen print is the matte alternative. Both need a minimum of about 110 yards of ribbon, which a 200-box run easily uses.
What ribbon width should I use?
Match the ribbon to the box width. 3/8 in on anything under 5 inches, 5/8 in for the middle sizes and 1 in for boxes over 8 inches or for a bow that should be seen from across a room. A ribbon that is too narrow looks like string; one that is too wide swamps a small box.
Can you dye ribbon to my brand color?
Stock satin and grosgrain come in around 60 colors and we match the closest on the proof, which is usually close enough. A dye-to-match run to a Pantone reference is available on satin and grosgrain, needs a minimum of about 550 yards, and adds 7 to 10 business days. We show you both options.
How does a magnet get fitted to a box I already have?
It does not, easily. Magnets are sunk into the board before the wrap goes on, so they are fitted at build. For a finished box we can supply self-adhesive magnet pairs that sit under a paper patch, which works but is visible. If you are ordering the box from us, the magnets go in properly.
What is a lift tab and do I need one?
A short loop of grosgrain glued into the base of a tray so a tight-fitting lid or a heavy insert lifts out with a finger. If your two-piece box is deep, or the insert holds a watch or a bottle snugly, yes. It costs almost nothing and stops customers prying at the box with a nail.
How is ribbon and closure hardware different from printed ribbon?
Hardware is the closure system for a box: ribbon, magnet pairs, elastic loops, hooks and eyelets, fitted to our rigid boxes or supplied for yours, with ribbon cut to the box and printed in foil or one color screen if you want it. Printed ribbon is ribbon sold by the 50 yard roll with your logo repeated along it, in satin or grosgrain at 3/8, 5/8 or 1 inch, for hand tying gifts, bows and bag handles. Hardware starts at 200 units in 12 to 14 business days after proof; printed ribbon at 500 units rolls in 10 to 12 business days. If the ribbon is part of the box, choose hardware; if your team ties it at the counter, choose the roll.
