Snack pouch

Clear window laminate200 minimum · 10 to 12 business days

A snack pouch is a stand up or flat barrier bag with a clear window so the product sells itself, a tear notch for single-serve sizes and a zipper for sharing sizes. We produce them, printed digitally, from 200 units in 10 to 12 business days after proof, on food-contact laminate in matte or gloss. Sizes run from a 1 ounce single serve to a 16 ounce family bag.

When to choose it, and when not to

Choose a snack pouch for granola, trail mix, jerky, dried fruit, popcorn, crackers, freeze-dried candy and anything that looks better than its ingredient list. A window on a printed pouch usually earns its place on a food shelf, because the buyer can see the size of the pieces and the color. Run a 1 to 2 ounce flat pouch for impulse and sampling and a 5 to 8 ounce stand up for the shelf.

Choose a smell proof mylar bag with full foil for anything that goes rancid quickly, such as nuts roasted in oil, because a window breaks the barrier. Choose a three side seal pouch without a window when the product is a powder or looks unremarkable and the print has to do the selling.

Questions people ask

How big can the window be?

As big as the panel allows, though we suggest keeping 0.5 inch of print around the edge so the seal and the design stay clean. Common shapes are a 2 by 3 inch oval, a full-height strip or a rounded rectangle across the lower third. The window is just the area where we leave off the white underprint, so any shape you draw on the dieline works.

Will a window hurt shelf life?

For dry snacks like crackers, granola and dried fruit, no; a clear PET/PE laminate keeps them crisp for 6 to 9 months. For oily nuts, chips fried in oil or anything with a high fat content, light through the window speeds up rancidity, so we suggest a metallized film with a small frosted window or none at all.

Zipper or no zipper?

Sharing sizes over 3 ounces get a press-to-close zipper. Single-serve sizes under 2 ounces usually skip it, since the pack is eaten in one sitting and the zipper adds cost and bulk. A tear notch is standard on every size.

Are the films food safe?

Yes. Every laminate we use for snack pouches is food-contact grade and the film documentation is supplied with the quote for your own records. The inside sealant is a plain PE layer with no odor transfer, and the same film runs whether the pouch holds dried fruit, jerky or popcorn.

Can I print nutrition facts on the back?

Yes. The back panel prints at the same time as the front. Send us the nutrition panel as vector artwork and we set it at the minimum type size for the panel width. On a 4 inch wide bag that is about 6 point, which is legible but tight, so keep the ingredient list short on small sizes.

How is the snack pouch different from the chip bag?

The snack pouch is a digitally printed stand up or flat barrier bag with a clear window, a tear notch on single serves and a zipper on sharing sizes, from 200 units in 10 to 12 business days after proof, so it suits several SKUs at short runs. The chip bag is a high-barrier stand up pouch heat sealed at fill and rated for a nitrogen-flush filling process, the build fried snacks need for shelf life, from 1,000 units in 10 to 12 business days. If you nitrogen flush on a co-packer's line, use the chip bag.
